Inaugurated on April 4th 1986, by Mother Teresa, the Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital Hospital Blood Bank provides 24 hours all services required for the provision and collection of safe blood. In addition to blood collected at the Centre, blood donation camps are also organised where donors can voluntarily donate blood.

Dr. BALABHAI NANAVATI HOSPITAL TRUST HOSPITAL IS THE ONLY HOSPITAL IN MUMBAI TAKING CARE OF SUCH A LARGE NUMBER OF THALASSEMIC CHILDREN.

The Blood Bank is affiliated to the Federation of Blood Banks, and is also a Member of the State Council for Safe Transfusion.

The Blood Bank ensures that all donated units are screened for serology tests like HIV, HBSAG, HCV, VDRL and malaria, as per FDA directives. Over the last year, all these tests have been automated - the automation of the Elisa test has reduced the steps of aliquating and rebelling. Specimen adding dilution, and other steps in the process, till report generation and print out, has helped to ensure that results are standardised and controlled.

Issue of Blood
Blood is issued to ward patients, OTs against the replacement and against Voluntary Donor Card and blood is also given to the Federation Blood Banks on a credit/debit basis, and to private Nursing Homes either against a donor credit card or replacement basis, with service charges.

59 thalassemia-affected children at present are receiving blood transfusions on a regular basis free of cost; once, twice or three times a month.

State of Art component lab at Kapoorben Vasanji Lathia Blood bank of Nanavati Hospital started in September 2005.

Earlier whole blood was exclusively used for transfusion. Currently the patients is administered only that constituent in which he or she is deficient. By this the patient gets maximum benefits at minimum risk and the components thus saved are conserved for other patients.

The term blood component includes various part of blood that are separated by conventional technology like centrifugation, freezing and thawing etc. , or by cell separator machines. When more sophisticated chemical or manufacturing processes are involved, the term plasma derivative or fraction is used.

Modern technology of blood collection in double triple or quadruples plastic bags has made it possible to utilize single unit of blood for several patients suffering from different diseases. For instance, by using a triple bag, an anaemic patients receives red cells, another one suffering from thrombocytopenia gets platelets and plasma after the separation of the cryoprecipitate for haemophiliac patients can be utilized for preparation of other fractions.

For preparation of platelets, blood is not to be stored in refrigerator otherwise these will aggregate and result in loss of functional utility. The processing of blood for platelets is done soon after collection. It is preferable to transfuse platelets after preparation but these can be stored at room temperature (22c) for a period of 5 days. Constants shaking throughout the period of storage is essential.
