Telemedicine Department at Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital

This first of its kind service was launched by Mr. Priyam Jhaveri Vice – Chairman of Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital. Deliberating on this concept, Consultant Heart Surgeon & Telemedicine Department co-coordinator, Dr. Pavan Kumar informed that this portable and handy device is a great diagnostic tool to know heart condition in heart patients specially after heart attacks, angioplasty or after heart operations, who will get their ECG recorded at home and transmitted to their physician’s mobile phone immediately for his quick advise.

This pioneering idea of twelve lead full ECG portable handy device was given by Dr. Pavan Kumar to Mr. Vinayak Deshpande – Business head of Maestros IMNC who along with his team of engineers developed this portable device totally indigenously last year. After developing the device, the team developed a software so that ECG can be transferred and seen on Mobile phones.

After 6 months of field trials of the device and mobile facility, it was perfected for use in masses. The device is half the cost to its foreign counterparts which works on sound based technology for signal transfer. Dr. Ashok Hatolkar –Medical superintendent of the hospital said that Nanavati Hospital Telemedicine department is in the forefronts in use of technology for benefit of patients by providing Tele-consultation to 31 peripheral hospitals in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and UT since 2006 benefitting more than 4000 patients in rural areas. He further added that future course of Tele – ECG project is to develop M2M technology within next few months and developing devices for measuring B.P. , Oxygen saturation and other parameters in sick patients at home. The use of this cutting edge technology will have profound impact in saving lives of heart patients and other sick patients.

Dr. Pavan Kumar further said that Heart patients will have to just dial Phone No: 022 – 26126656 between 10.30am to 5.30pm for registering at Telemedicine centre to avail Tele - ECG & ECG on Mobile service and a paramedic will be sent with this portable device. In-fact this device is so simple that a patient with a little training, can himself record and send his ECG. The device can be rented or bought since it is not so expensive and would help the patient in long term usage by keeping him connected to his heart specialist. This will enhance his confidence and security as advice about his ECG is ready at hand and his treating doctor can read his ECG in no-time.
