Telemedicine

What is Telemedicine?

It   is  delivery  of  healthcare  services  over distance by healthcare professionals using information  and  communication technologies for diagnosis , treatment and prevention of  disease  and  for  education  of  health  care  providers  for improved performance to deliver better health to needy.

Telemedicine Master Centre Reaching International Level

Telemedicine centre was established in 2006 with state of art equipments and has been a hub of activity for our hospital and its consultants. The centre has steadily grown from one peripheral centre in 2006 to 32 peripheral centers now. We are now the largest Telemedicine serviceproviders in western India. Tele consultations to these 32 centers are being conducted every day along with regular CME programs where our honorary consultants give lectures and slide presentation to these centers. Now with the active guidance and support of our Vice Chairman, Mr. Priyam Jhaveri, we have launched our international service to African countries in March with Tanzania as a pioneering country.

Following are the services currently provided by Telemedicine Master Centre.

a) The ISDN/ Broadband Network and its connectivity to following centers :
1) Mandvi, Bhuj (Kutch,Gujrat )
2) Shri. Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj Hospital,Jalgaon, Maharashtra.
3) Shri. Vinoba Bhave Hospital, Silvassa,U.T.

b)  The NRHM (Satellite based) Network :
Telemedicine Master centre is now connected to 28 District hospitals in Maharashtra under NRHM [National Rural Health Mission] project. Nanavati hospital is the only private hospital recognized by Maharashtra state NRHM for super-specialty services.

As NRHM services will expand further we would be catering to 20 more sub-district hospitals in Maharashtra. This tie up has resulted in benefitting many patients by getting tele-consultation from our specialists since 2008. Furthermore, during the swine flu epidemic, our specialist actively participated in the CME programmes conducted by different district hospitals.

As we would be covering all district hospitals connected to us in the whole Maharashtra, weencourage our consultants to conduct CME in area of their special interest which would result in strengthening their bond with their colleagues in home towns and also facilitate our consultants to see / consult their patients in their home towns via our telemedicine centre. All consultants are encouraged to use the NRHM network for the benefit of the patients.

The first of its kind service -Tele - ECG and ECG on mobile was launched by Mr. Priyam Jhaveri Vice-Chairman of Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital. According to Consultant Heart Surgeon & Telemedicine Department co-coordinator Dr. Pavan Kumar, this portable and handy device is a great diagnostic tool to know heart condition in heart patientsspecially after heart attacks, angioplasty or after heart operations, who will get their ECG recorded at home and transmitted to their physician’s mobile phone immediately for quick advise.

This pioneering idea of twelve lead full ECG portable handy device was given by Dr. Pavan Kumar to Mr. Vinayak Deshpande - Business head of Maestros IMNC who along with his team of engineers developed this portable device. After developing the device, the team developed a software so that ECG can be transferred and seen on Mobile phones. After 6 months of field trials of the device and mobile facility, it was perfected for use in masses. The device is half the cost to its foreign counterparts which works on sound based technology for signaltransfer. The telemedicine department is in the forefronts in use of technology for benefit of patients byproviding Tele-consultation to 31 peripheral hospitals in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and UT since 2006 benefitting more than 4000 patients in rural areas. The future course of Tele - ECG project is to develop M2M technology within next few months and developing devices for measuring B.P. Oxygen saturation and other parameters in sick patients at home. The use of this cutting edge technology will have profound impact in saving lives of heart patients and other sick patients.

This development has been greatly appreciated by IT companies in health sector and we shall be partnered by Vodafone for national launch and Blackberry Mobile (Research in Motion) services for international launch. By using this technique the software can be uploaded on Blackberry Application World and can be downloaded on Mobile phones anywhere in the world.

The International foot print:
Nanavati Hospital is the only hospital in western India to be recognized by Ministry of external affairs (Government of India) through TCIL to provide super-specialty services forPan - African E - Network & also one amongst the eleven prestigious hospitals in India like AIIMS, Delhi / Amrita Institute, Kochi / Narayan Hrudayalaya, Bangaluru etc. to provide Tele consultations and CME to African countries since March 2009.

A Special studio has been created in Tele - medicine center where professional gadgets like Sony C-Mos, DVCAMcorder, large Electronic polyvision touch screen board, Sony Anycast editingstation, Canon Visualizer, 42” Plasma Monitor by Hitachi, Servers from HCL are housed.Connectivity to Africa is by undersea fiber optic cable by Airtel to our center.

Our consultants will be conducting weekly CME to African countries and Tele - consultations will commence from April 2010.

Telemedicine centre has made rapid strides since 2006. We are in the forefront in use of Information technology in health sector for benefit of people and will strive to achieve higher goals in E - health and M - health on completion of future projects.

Award to Telemedicine Centre

Our Nanavati Hospital - Telemedicine Centre headed by Dr. Pavan Kumar won EDGE award by INTEROP organisation. The centre is pioneer in this field and has successfully created a rural health care model through telemedicine. Till date our Hospital has to its credit over 4000 teleconsultation and 500 treatments culminating in saving time, money & efforts for the patients.
EDGE awards are given by Information Week Magazine every year for outstanding contribution & innovations in IT (Information Technology) sector. Our Telemedicine Centre was adjudged the best category in use of Information Technology in health sector in year 2011. Our congratulations to Dr. Pavan Kumar & his team.
